NightSaver electricity tariffs Ireland
NightSaver tariffs offer a significantly cheaper unit rate during night hours (11pm–8am) in exchange for a higher rate during the day. The key question is whether you use enough electricity at night to make it worthwhile.
Who is a Nightsaver tariff for?
NightSaver works well for households that run a dishwasher and washing machine overnight, have storage heating that charges overnight, or plan to charge an electric vehicle (though EV tariffs offer even better rates). It also suits households where someone is regularly active late at night.
How does it work?
Between 11pm and 8am, you pay the cheap night rate. Between 8am and 11pm, you pay the higher day rate. Your total cost depends on what percentage of your kWh you use during each period.
Advantages
- •Night rate as low as 14.22c/kWh — roughly one-third of day rates
- •Major savings if you charge an EV, run dishwashers, or do laundry overnight
- •Standing charges are the same as standard tariffs
- •No smart meter required
Disadvantages
- •Day rate is typically 2–4c/kWh higher than standard tariffs
- •Only saves money if 30%+ of your usage is at night
- •You need to actively manage when you run appliances
Frequently asked questions
What percentage of usage do I need at night to benefit?
As a rough guide, you need around 25–35% of your total usage at night to break even vs a standard tariff. The higher your night percentage, the more you save.
Can I get NightSaver without a smart meter?
Yes — NightSaver works with a standard dual-register meter. Your night usage is recorded separately. Only smart tariffs require a smart meter.
